Brood War Rules of Play (Regular Season Finals and World Championships)

  1. Both players must appear on Battle.net fifteen (15) minutes prior to appointed match time which is determined by Blizzard. The Brood War Tournament Official observing the match will give each player a fifteen (15) minute grace period after the appointed match time. In the event that a player is not present at the time end of this grace period, a forfeit will be awarded to the opposing player.

  2. If neither player is present at the designated time, the match will be counted as a double forfeit. Matches may be rescheduled if a player notifies Brood War Tournament Officials by writing to SCTournament@blizzard.com at least, but no later than twenty-four (24) hours prior to the appointed match time in question, or if the player is present at match time but cannot play for technical reasons. A maximum of one (1) reschedule will be allowed per player, per match. Again, it is the sole responsibility of each player to ensure that their connection and software function correctly prior to the start of any match.

  3. In the event of an internal problem, technical problem or otherwise with Battle.net, all affected matches will be rescheduled. In such an event, Brood War Tournament Officials will announce the rescheduled match times.

  4. Players should not join, start or enter a game until a Brood War Tournament Official is present and instructs them to do so.

  5. All decisions made by the Brood War Tournament Officials are final regarding any disputes or decisions. For example, if a player was clearly winning a match, but was disconnected at the last minute, the Brood War Tournament Official has the authority to award that player the win. Similarly, a player abusing the regulated "draw" time rule will be forced to take a loss.

  6. Regulated "draw" time surrenders due to technical difficulty or a call by the Brood War Tournament Official will result in a mandatory restart of the match on the same map. To the contrary, build order mistakes will not be counted as draws, nor will attempts to force draws on early rushers or failed rush attempts. Match restarts shall be reserved for technical difficulties only.

  7. Screenshots from each player MUST be taken at the referee's discretion. These screenshots and/or other information, data or game logs requested by Blizzard must be transmited to SCTournament@blizzard.com (or any other address or FTP site provided by Blizzard Entertainment) within ten (10) minutes following the match's completion. Screenshots should be labeled with the player's screen name, match number, etc., which will be provided at the time screenshots are requested. Screenshots taken at the beginning of a match will be disregarded. The screenshots will be used as evidence in disputes and/or match play anomalies. In the event that the applicable screenshots are not sent within a reasonable timeframe, the player will most likely have his or her Starcraft: Brood War Ladder ranking reset or be disqualified from the rest of the tournament.

  8. All players must play with map settings on an approved Brood War Tournament map. The Brood War Tournament Officials will not interact with the gameplay in any way except to observe and periodically save the game.

  9. Only Brood War Tournament Officials may pause the game. Any player needing a time-out in the middle of a game must inform the Brood War Tournament Official within the game. The Brood War Tournament Official will, in his or her sole discretion, determine if such a pause is necessary.

  10. In general, disconnects are counted as losses, even in the event of a close game. As stated previously, the Brood War Tournament Official has the authority to force a restart if he or she deems it necessary. Similarly, the Brood War Tournament Official may award, in his or her sole discretion, a win to the disconnected player in certain, very strict circumstances. These include, but are not limited to, scenarios such as these:

    a. A player is clearly winning, has total control of the map, but is accidentally disconnected.

    b. A player who was awarded the win due to his or her opponent disconnecting was discovered to be cheating. In this case the win would go to the disconnected player.

  11. All players should thoroughly test their connections to the Internet and Battle.net prior to their appointed match time. Any player unsure about their connection quality may request the Brood War Tournament Official to join a five-minute mock-match for both players to test their respective connections.

  12. Starcraft: Brood War maps with the LADDER icon next to their names and specified as Regular Season Finals or World Championship maps are the only maps to be used during the Regular Season Finals and the World Championships, respectively. In each round, the higher ranked player will choose the map for the first game and the lower ranked player will choose the map for the second game. The Starcraft: Brood War Tournament Official will randomly select the map for the third game utilizing the following guidelines:

    a. Each player will be allowed to name one Disallowed Map.

    b. The remainder of the maps not specifically disallowed by the players will be placed into a random draw to be executed by the Starcraft: Brood War Tournament Official.

    c. The game will then take place on whichever map prevails.

    d. If both players opt for every approved map to be included in the random draw, then there will be no maps thrown out.

  13. Default game speed is "fast" and all games will be played at that speed.

  14. There will be no more than six (6) games scheduled per day, per player.

  15. The top two (2) players will compete in a "best-of-five" series of games, with the first player to win three games being declared as the Regular Season Champion or World Champion as applicable. Each player will select one (1) map to play on, and Brood War Tournament Officials will randomly select the remaining three (3) maps to be used for the championship competition. The remaining three (3) maps to be used in the championship competition will be selected using substantially similar methodology as set forth in Section 12 above. Games will be played at the rate of no less than one (1) per day and under the rules of Finals play.
