Gameplay

Why am I not getting experience from my parties' kills?
You need to be within 2 screens from the monster death. This prevents low-level characters from joining a party and then staying completely out of harm's way while still getting Experience.

Why can't I enter my party member's Town Portal?
You cannot enter Town Portals cast by other players in areas beyond the "blocking quests" without having completed those quests: e.g., Canyon of the Magi/Seven Tombs/Duriel's Lair (The Summoner), The Harem/Palace Basement/Arcane Sanctuary (The Tainted Sun), Durance of Hate (The Blackened Temple), The Worldstone Keep (The Ancients), The Secret Cow Level (Terror's End in DII classic or Eve of Destruction in DII: LoD). NOTE: A player who kills the High Council (but doesn't use Khalim's Will to smash the Compelling Orb), may take a Town Portal into the Durance of Hate.

This is to prevent higher level players from helping lower level players to advance further in the game without working for it. If a player is unable to enter a portal, this means they need to complete a quest.

What is the purpose of Wirt's Leg?
It is used to unlock The Secret Cow Level. MoooOOOOooooo.

How does Imbue work?
Imbue creates a new rare item out of the base item you want to Imbue. The stats of the base item do not matter as it is only used to determine what type of rare item will result from using Imbue. Also, the quality of the item used (Superior, Normal, Damaged, etc.) does not affect the new item. Any properties of the old item are lost when the new rare item is created. Your character level determines what magical properties your new rare item can have, so characters with higher levels have more, but not always better, options available. Consult the Magic Prefix and Suffix pages for a listing of Magical Bonuses and levels. Since the magical properties on items created are random, you might not always receive a 'good item' from Imbue.

Where can I find Exceptional Socketed Items?
If you're having problems finding Exceptional Socketed Items, try looking for them in Nightmare difficulty instead of Hell. Depending on the current Act and the monsters' levels, specific Exceptional Socketed Items are more likely to spawn in certain areas than others. As monsters increase in level, they no longer drop Socketed Items, as the game considers these items to be lower in value than Superior Quality items.

How big is a yard?
About 3 feet (groan). Diablo II uses the yard only for comparison purposes; it is not a measurement that is easily shown in-game. Within the game, a yard is 24 pixels in vertical direction and 48 pixels in horizontal direction.

How do I get back to Act III from Act IV?
Use the Waypoint in Act IV and select any Waypoint in Act III such as Kurast Docks.

Can Magic Items, Rare Items, Set Items, and Unique Items be Socketed?
Yes, with a Cube Formula or with a quest reward in Act V.

What is the purpose of the "Ghosts," the evil forces in Mephisto’s Lair?
They do some damage, are difficult to kill, and can kill players. They have no hidden purpose.

Why are my Resistances -40?
Resistances on Nightmare Difficulty start at -40 and -100 on Hell Difficulty. Whenever you enter games of those difficulty levels, your resistances will be changed; once you join a Normal Difficulty game, your resistances will be reset to a base of 0.

What is Magic Damage?
When we refer to magic damage to players, we are referring to elemental damage (Fire, Cold, Lightning). For example, the magic prefix on items that reduces magic damage reduces elemental damage.

For Poison Damage, what does 'X damage over Y seconds' mean?
It does X damage total over its duration, Y seconds. It does not do X damage every second for Y seconds.

Does Poison Damage stack?
No. No poisoning effects stack. If the poison damage inflicted per second of a poison attack is greater than the poison damage inflicted per second of an already applied attack, the new attack will cancel out the old one. If the new attack inflicts less poison damage per second than the previous, the new poison is ignored.

What is the definition of Open Wounds?
This is a chance of making a monster bleed uncontrollably. Monsters with open wounds lose health continuously while bleeding. For technical information on Open Wounds, see the page on special magic effects.
