A well known sight along the Rim, Goliath Combat Walkers combine all-terrain maneuverability with compu-based heavy weapons systems. The one-man Goliath’s arsenal consists of twin anti-armor 20mm Auto-Cannons and Hellfire Missiles for anti-air support. Goliaths have 12 normal ground damage. While this is respectable, Goliaths are more useful in fighting air targets. The ground attack of the Goliath can be successful when using a very large numbers of Goliaths, but resources would be better spent on Tanks and Marines if that is your goal is to attack ground targets. Goliath ground damage can be effective when using them with Siege Tanks. The Goliaths can finish off any target that makes it past the Siege Tanks and also provide great attack against any air attacks that might come in. Goliaths have an Explosive air attack (50% damage to Small Units 75% damage to Medium Units). This makes them useful against Large air units mainly such as Terran(Wraiths, Battlecruisers and Science Vessels), Protoss(Arbiters, Carriers, Shuttles), Zerg(Overlords). Missile turrets have less Cooldown (time between attacks) as compared to Goliaths. It is better to use Missile turrets to attack a unit than Goliaths, since they are only 100 Minerals, compared to a Goliath which is an additional 50 gas. Goliath's strength lies in its mobility. While a Missile Turret is more effective than a Goliath, it cannot chase an enemy and move around to address dangers on the fly. That is where Goliaths excel. If you want to attack or defend against air targets on high ground, sending up an SCV in a Dropship to build missile turrets might not be as easy and effective as sending 4 Goliaths in a Dropship. Goliaths come in very handy when defending yourself on higher ground. They can prevent Dropships from landing, and quickly respond to air attacks. There are many situations where you might want to use Marines and Missile Turrets instead of Goliaths, but keep in mind what units Goliaths are effective against and the advantages of their mobility. One thing to note when fighting Zerg players is that the Goliath is not the best unit to use against Mutalisks. Mutalisks are considered Small units, and because the Goliath does explosive damage against air targets, they only do 50% damage against Mutalisks. The same is the case with Missile Turrets, and Wraiths. Because of this, the best units to use against Mutalisks are Stim Packed Marines and Battlecruisers when given the choice.
